Samantha Does Warrington Proud at Miss England

Miss Cheshire, Warrington Girl Samantha Cross, took part in the Miss England Finals earlier this week and was a credit to the area.

The Finals, consisting of 61 girls, were held over two days at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham on Monday and Tuesday.

Samantha took part in the Welcome Party, an Eco Fashion Show and Talent round on the Monday evening.

In the Eco Fashion Show the 61 girls had all created their own outfits from either recycled, re-used or ethically sourced materials.

On the Tuesday Samantha took part in the main event which consisted of an opening scene wearing a specially created Miss England Dress created by leading fashion designer Karen Karmody, an Evening Wear section and a Sports Wear Finale.

Samantha closely missed out on a Top 15 place in a fiercely contested Final.

Alize Lily Mounter was crowned Miss England in a ceremony which was streamed live online.

Samantha said of her experience;

“I was delighted to be given the opportunity to represent Cheshire on such a big occasion”

“It was an incredible experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life”

“I’ve made so many new friends from all over the country, all the girls were so lovely”

“I’m looking forward to the rest of my year as Miss Cheshire now and hope to get involved with as many things in the area as possible”

Miss Cheshire at Boot Camp

Miss Cheshire, Samantha Cross, was put through her paces “Army Style” last Monday as part of her preparation for the Miss England Finals.

Sam travelled down to the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham for the Miss England Sports Boot Camp Event.

Army Physical Training Instructors from www.regimentfitness.co.uk put all 61 finalists through a gruelling 2 hour fitness test.

The contestants took part in warm up exercises as well as Army Drills including Press Ups, Sit Ups, Burpies and Shuttle Runs.

The Top 20 contestants were then “rewarded” by taking part in one final test, the Army Bleep Test.

A running endurance test where the prize for the last girl standing was a fast track place in the Top 15 at the Miss England Final.

Sam did magnificently, but narrowly lost out to eventual Miss England Sportswoman award winner
Jade Williams (Miss Stratford Upon Avon).

Sam said of the experience;
“Today has been a lot of hard work, but at the same time it has been really enjoyable, I have enjoyed myself and had a good time with the other finalists.”

Sam now has 3 weeks to prepare for the Miss England Final on 19th July in Birmingham.

What a Week!

Well, what a fun few days! Last week, it was the Miss England 2010 final and so I am now back to reality!

I had an absolutely lovely time and met girls from across the country. The final was held at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham and we all had a very fun couple of days!

We had a busy couple of days and for much of the time, we were rehearsing for the big event. We also attended the Miss England Welcome Party, which was a good giggle as we were all wearing eco-friendly outfits! Unfortunately, I had not thought of the logistics of my outfit and I could not sit during the evening – this was because it was made of paper and it would have just ripped!

I was made up to find out that I had placed in the top 5 for the Stunning Style Award with Great Lengths. Big congratulations to Jaime-Lee Faulkner, who actually won the award and placed 2nd in the whole competition!

Jessica Linley, Miss Nottingham, stole the show and walked away with the Miss England crown. Jess will be a fantastic Miss England – she is not only beautiful but also bright and articulate, she will be a fantastic representative at Miss World. I really do wish her the best of luck!

Although I did not win, I had a fantastic time and I placed in the top 20, which I was thrilled with. I think there were over 20,000 applicants to Miss England this year and so to place in the top 20 is incredible!

Miss Cheshire’s Got Talent

Gone are the days when pageants were based wholly on beauty and bikinis. The Miss England contest has ensured that it is well and truly in the 21st century, having abolished the swimwear round earlier this year. Another contemporary aspect of the competition is the talent award, which enables the contestants to showcase their skills. The winner of the ‘Miss England’s Got Talent Award’ will automatically be placed in the top 20 at the Miss England final.

Each of the 60 Miss England finalists (including myself!) have now submitted a DVD of their talent and the judges will decide on a top ten for this award. The top ten DVD’s will be shown at the Miss England Welcome Party on Tuesday 31st August.

There was no limit on what our talent could be and so I was faced with endless opportunities of what I could submit, being an super-talented young woman… or not. The obvious ‘talents’ I considered were:

- Singing – I quickly dismissed this idea in light of me not even making the school choir at primary school. I auditioned every year since I was 7 and I was never selected, that had to tell me something.

- Dancing – Whilst not a bad dancer, I didn’t feel my dancing skills would quite match up to those of the more experienced (or professional) dancers in the competition. I have not been to a dance class since I was 13 and I was classed as a ’starter’ then. My thoughts were that dance would probably be a popular talent so my skills would definitely come under the spotlight as being ‘not quite up to scratch.’

- Horseriding – Scared of horses and have never ridden one. This idea was quickly dismissed.

- Acting – Definitely could be classed as a drama queen and very fond of acting but was not too sure how to convey this in a DVD. Considered a Shakespeare soliquy but decided that it could (and probably would) come across as over the top and I could fail miserably in my efforts.

Other options I considered were dismissed as quickly as I thought of them. Except one!! Several years ago, I trained as a flair bartender. Flairing is the art of throwing cocktail bottles and hopefully catching them. I decided that with a bit of practice, a bit of flair was definitely the way forward.

So, having decided on flairing as my talent. I now had to set about the tasking of filming it. Luckily, I had some amazing help from Vision4Dreams. Vision4Dreams are based in Warrington (www.vision4dreams.com) and specialise in creative media production and so I filmed my DVD with them. They were absolutely lovely to work with and completely professional. To say I was happy with the end result is an understatement, I thought it was perfect!

With 60 girls in the competition, I can only hope that I might make it into to the top ten for the talent award – fingers crossed!

Thank you to Vision4Dreams for helping me create my DVD.

Fit for a Queen

With the Miss England final getting ever closer, the 2010 contestants were invited to a special evening at the Rigby & Peller, Conduit St Store. We were joined by the reigning Miss England, Katrina Hodge.

Rigby and Peller offer the perfect lingerie experience and I couldn’t stop staring (or drooling perhaps!) at the gorgeous designs – I wanted to buy everything. Not only that, but they provide underwear for the Queen and so, you can’t really have a more impressive client! We all experienced a unique Rigby & Peller fitting and chose the perfect lingerie for the big night.

The evening was absolutely lovely and it was great to see the girls before the final. Without a doubt, the most frequently asked questions during the evening were ‘Do you have your dress yet?’ and ‘Oooh what’s it like?’ – typical girls! Luckily, none of us have described the same dress and so hopefully we won’t be caught out in matching outfits!

I had a great time and I think it is safe to say that I am now even more excited for the Miss England final!

Thank you to everyone at the Rigby and Peller store for a great evening.

Miss England Goes to Southport

Miss England goes to Southport!

One of my prizes for winning Miss Cheshire was a training and preparation day with the current Miss England, Katrina Hodge. I couldn’t wait for this, as who could give better advice than Miss England herself?

The day was held in Southport and I was joined by several of the northern Miss England contestants. Our ‘pageant bootcamp’ took place at the Vincent Hotel, which was an absolutely stunning hotel (I am already planning a trip back there).

Our lesson in all things ‘pageant’ consisted of several different areas including catwalk training, media advice and modelling hints & tips. We were also joined by the official choreographer for Miss England -Lisa Powell, the director of ‘Modelzed’ model agency – Kate Solomons, Paul Fisher – an incredible photographer, and top PR agency – Paver Smith, who all gave us valuable advice.

Whilst I was there, I was also interviewed by Real Radio, which I loved! I am hoping I might have dazzled them and they will be ringing me soon to offer me my own show!

To say it was a fun (and girly!) day would be an understatement; we all had a good giggle and ended the day ready for the Miss England final.

Thank you to Mark at MDC Events Ltd for organising such a fantastic day for us all.

All Things Fashion

At the moment, I am trying to make sure that I have everything ready for the Miss England final… as it is only two weeks away!

In the competition, I have to wear an evening gown – I love this part as it is a great chance to dress up! My dress is currently being made by Jennifer Wu; I found many of her designs on ebay http://stores.ebay.com/dress-house-of-jenniferwu and absolutely loved them! I am keeping the design of mine a secret at the moment but I think it will be fabulous!

In Miss England, we also have to model an Eco-friendly fashion outfit. My aim is to wear something that will be really different but my problem is that I am not creative in the slightest. I attempted to make an outfit a couple of weeks ago and it was an utter disaster. That efford ended up in the bin and fortunately, I have enlisted the help of a couple of creative friends to assist me with my next attempt. Fingers crossed it will be more successful.

At the moment, I am loving tights. I know it sounds strange but they are my solution to the dismal British weather. I love wearing dresses and skirts but the weather means it’s almost impossible to… as I don’t fancy getting caught in the rain with bare legs! So, tights solve this problem for me. I get all of my tights from www.tightsplease.co.uk and have done for a couple of years. The site is so easy to use and they have such a wide variety – you don’t just have to plain black ones! The tights that I keep wearing at the moment are these www.tightsplease.co.uk/brands/red-or-dead/addy-tights from Red Or Dead – they are just that bit different so sass up a denim skirt!

Tights Please also have a blog, which keeps me (and probably several others!) up to date with the latest styles… you can make sure you know all of the latest tight trends by reading it at blog.tightsplease.co.uk

I’ll be making sure that I share any other fashion secrets with you!

Dragon Boat Racing

Over the weekend, I attended a Dragon Boat Race for the Warrington charity, St Rocco’s Hospice. I have to say, I had no idea what to expect but it really was a fantastic day!

The race was held at Warrington Boat Club and fortunately, the British weather was on our side and there was not a spot of rain. It was a miracle!

It was a lot of fun to watch and everybody made a real effort – several of the teams had come in fancy dress, from pirates to pyjamas!

I was honoured to present the awards with the Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Ted Finnegan. However, the most important trophy of the day went to the PQ Pirates who were selected as having the best outfits!

Well done to St Rocco’s for organising such a fantastic event!

Miss Cheshire Heads to Boot Camp

This week I had met all of the Miss England 2010 finalists for the first time – as it was the first ever Miss England Bootcamp!

Miss England 2010, Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, persuaded the competition organisers to remove the bikini round from the competition this year and it has been replaced with a sportswear round.

So, myself and the other 59 Miss England finalists headed to the Hilton Hotel in Birmingham, where we competed for the Sportswoman Award. It was a great day but not for the faint hearted! Katrina was joined by serving British army soldiers and we were put through our paces to determine who would win Miss Sportswoman 2010.

It was not a huge surprise for me when I found out that I had not been selected as the winner! I tried by best but began to resemble a tomato as the afternoon continued; The deserving winner was Miss Newark and District, Stephanie Pywell. Stephanie is the current British International High Jump Champion, and has qualified to compete within the Commonwealth games held in Delhi at the end of September.…… so I think it would have been something short of a miracle if I had managed to win the award! Not only was she incredible at the challenge but she was also a lovely & genuine person. Stephanie is sponsored by Warrington company ‘Asics UK’….. so perhaps next time she comes up here she can give me a training session!

2nd place went to Miss Southport, Abi Bridgeman. Abi is part of ‘Team North’ and she did amazingly!

Overall I had a fantastic day and now can’t wait for the Miss England final at the end of the month! You can see more information at www.missengland.info Make sure you follow me on twitter to keep up to date with everything I am doing @Misscheshire_10

PS Can you spot me in the TV Report? :o )
